Club History

The Strathalbyn Garden Group met informally for the first 12 months. Then, on 26th June 1998, the members convened at the Strathalbyn Community Centre to hold its very first AGM (Annual General Meeting). To their dismay, the Centre had been double-booked on that day. Fortunately, Alexandrina Council solved the immediate problem by allowing the Garden Group to hold its AGM in the official Council Chambers. And so it was, that the first Strathalbyn Garden Group AGM was held in style, in elegant surroundings.

At this meeting it was unanimously decided that the Group should formally become the STRATHALBYN GARDEN CLUB. It was decided to introduce an annual subscription of $5 per member, payable at each July meeting. At that meeting there was an attendance of 29 members.
A Committee was formed, including executive positions, and the newly named Strathalbyn Garden Club became an Incorporated body. The Club then became affiliated with the Garden Clubs of Australia.

By July 1999, the Club had outgrown the Strathalbyn Community Centre and it was therefore time to find larger accommodation. Up to this time, the Alexandrina Council had very kindly allowed the Club to use the premises free of charge, but the ever increasing number of people attending each meeting meant that the Community Centre was just not large enough to cope. So, as from August 1999, the Club moved to St Andrew’s Church Hall.

Since that time, the Club has grown at an astounding rate. We currently have approximately 136 members on our Financial Members List. Average attendance at the monthly meetings is around 75 members.

From humble beginnings back in May of 1997, this Club has blossomed into a vibrant, busy, informative, friendly and sociable group due to the enthusiasm, assistance and hard work given by just a handful of keen gardening enthusiasts.

The current club subscription is $10 with members voting to increase the subs at the AGM in 2013.
