Spirit of Strathalbyn Rose
History
During
2009, South Australian rose breeder & Strathalbyn Garden Club
member George Thomson, was invited to speak to a meeting of the Friends
of the Strathalbyn and District Health Complex.
When
the Friends asked if it was possible for Strathalbyn to have its own
special rose,George immediately offered this beautiful specimen.
At
Strathalbyn's 24th annual Strath Craft Fair (30th April 2011) in support
of the Reg Sissons Memorial Day Care Centre, Gardening Australia's
Sophie Thomson very kindly launched the rose and named it Spirit of
Strathalbyn. Its sale supports the Friends of the Strathalbyn and
District Healt Complex.
While
talking to George about the price for Spirit of Strathalbyn plants (at
this stage the Friends were beginning to take orders) George asked "You
ladies raise money for your hospital don't you?" The reply was "Yes",
whereupon George said "I'll give you this rose." This of course meant
that the Friends were to receive royalties - an enormous display of
generosity on George's part!
